Uechi Ryu (Pangainoon) Tiger Boxing

Uechi Kanban

Most modern karate is said to be either soft or hard style, as they developed within the village system. From the Naha-Te school come the Goju Ryu and Uechi Ryu traditions, both considered to be of the harder internal styles, although "Soft/Hard" is within the names and foundation of these styles.

Uechi Kanei

The Uechi Ryu heritage is one of the most popular styles of Okinawan Karate Do practiced today through out the world. This style was founded by Uechi Kanban (1877-1948) after he went to China to study the arts for many years. He studied at the Kojo Dojo and then most importantly with Zhou Zhi (Shu Shi Wa; Japanese pronunciation) reportedly the civil boxing teacher for the Black Tiger Triad Benevolent Society. After ten years study he returned home to Okinawa and taught his version of Quan’ Fa. His son Uechi Kanei (June 26, 1911-Feb. 24, 1991) trained in his fathers system and passed these techniques on. Sensei Sali Azem earned his first Black belt in Uechi ryu and later trained with Uechi Kanei himself. This style has a powerful Tiger Boxing heritage.
