Class Structure
Classes at Spirit First Martial Arts mainly consists of, but are not limited to the following elements:
- FORMAL ETIQUETTE (Reigi) - The moral and ethical foundation of martial arts: character, honesty, effort, courtesy, and self-control.
- WARM-UP (Junbi Undo) - Calisthenics, that develop flexibility, balance, and strength using common exercises, old Japanese and Chinese methods and Yoga influence as well.
- BASIC TECHNIQUES (Kihon Waza) - These are the fundamental basic movements of Karate-Do, including stances, blocks, punch, strikes, and kicks.
- FORMAL EXERCISES (Kata) - Classical forms that have come to us through the centuries of practice and the foundation of all traditional Karate-Do. Over time, dedicated practice of kata helps develop a high level of fitness, a confident and relaxed state of mind, and an understanding of effective self-defence strategies and tactics.
- SPARRING (Kumite) - One-step sparring drills teach the beginner to apply basic self-defense strategies and techniques with a partner acting as the attacker.
SPARRING (Kumite) - Free sparring develops skills in a safely controlled environment. - OYO and OMOTE (two person application sets) - Two person sets were the original methods of training in the arts, practicing the development of applications through combat grappling, striking, and pressure point techniques, as devised over centuries.
- ANCIENT WEAPONS (Kobudo) - Our curriculum includes classical Okinawan methods of employing the staff (bo), truncheon (sai), and many other traditional martial arts.
